Nicholas Doucette had just started an investment career in Boston, thinking this was going to be his future. Then one day, everything changed. Nicholas’ best friend was diagnosed with a rare form of renal cancer, hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer (HLRCC).
“Accompanying him on this journey was transformational for me,” Nicholas said. “I learned first-hand what it takes to go through that battle with someone you love, and how important it is for cancer patients to receive high-quality care.”
Nicholas frequently travelled to Maryland to visit his friend and volunteer at Driven to Cure, a non-profit organization founded by his friend. At the same time, Nicholas started research into companies that were offering cancer treatments with a strong patient focus.
“That’s how I first learned about Novocure; they stood out by supporting their patients in any way they could,” he said.
One day in 2019, when he was on a train to Boston returning from a visit with his friend in hospice, Nicholas became determined to work for Novocure and make a difference in cancer.
Later that year, he joined Novocure as a Reimbursement Specialist.
For the next couple of years, Nicholas worked in multiple areas of the company, drawing on his financial background and growing professionally.
“It was an exciting time, and I learned a lot quickly. I always focused on the question, ‘What can I do to make the biggest impact where I am right now?’” he said.
Nicholas received a promotion to the position of Manager, Patient Administration Strategy and Project Support in 2023. He joined a team dedicated to working directly with patients to ensure any financial or insurance coverage questions are resolved to help patients start using our therapy in a timely manner.
“I was so grateful to be offered this position,” he said. “It provided an opportunity to innovate and directly impact the quality of support that Novocure could provide to patients.”

‘One text can make a difference’
Nicholas collaborated with his colleagues to implement a text messaging solution that would make it simple for patients to contact Novocure.
Patients in the U.S. now receive an initial text message informing them that Novocure would like to reach out regarding their recent prescription for Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) therapy.
“It motivates the patient to call us, at a time of their convenience, and that helps,” Nicholas said.
Another solution that Nicholas and his colleagues implemented enabled the Novocure name to display above the phone number.
“Now patients know it is us calling to assist them with their therapy, reassuring them to accept the call,” he said.
Nicholas is excited about the momentum his work created for further innovation, towards personalized patient support.
Because of his personal experience, Nicholas knows the psychological and physical challenges that cancer patients face every day, and that high-quality support can mean the world to them.
Nicholas is proud to contribute to Novocure’s mission of striving to extend survival in some of the most aggressive forms of cancer.
He feels that it really means something when we say that we are a patient-forward company.
